We come from all walks of life, but are united by our determination to oppose the planned McCormick Pit and re-evaluate all aspects of the aggregate industry's relationship to our community and to society. We want to establish and promote a number of principles, including the idea that there should be 'NO DAMAGE WITHOUT COMPENSATION'. We are calling for new policies that would require aggregate operators to do Full Cost Accounting when evaluating the economic viability of a proposed operation.
Full Cost Accounting means: accounting that recognizes ALL economic, environmental, health, and social costs of an action or decision. This includes negative impacts on property values and municipal revenues.
Aggregate operations are not a public service, they are private, for-profit businesses. Local residents and municipalities should no longer be forced to financially subsidize these businesses so they can be economically viable or make excessive profits. Profit-seeking corporations must be required to calculate and compensate for the full social and environmental costs before being permitted to proceed with expanded mining operations such as is proposed for the McCormick property in the World Biosphere area of our Niagara Escarpment.
